Estaba escuchando la radio y salió Alan Freed comunicando que Johnny Ace se había matado jugando a la ruleta rusa. Fue la primera vez que entré en contacto con ese tipo de violencia, fue a mediados de los cincuenta. Y a mediados de los sesenta John Kennedy fue asesinado....Y cuando John Lennon fue asesinado, con todo lo impactante que fue, no me causó la misma impresión que cuando murió Johnny Ace. No es una visión nostálgica de los cincuenta, Johnny Ace está usado como una metáfora de los tres John (Ace, Kennedy y Lennon)". Éstas son algunas de las reflexiones del propio Simon sobre esta pieza que resultan bien explícitas sobre la temática de la misma. Debe resaltarse cómo Simon recuerda en esta canción sus años juveniles en Londres, tan fructíferos a nivel compositivo para él, así como su forma de vivir en plan bohemio junto a otros músicos ingleses y americanos en el piso de su novia Kathy. Curiosamente este tema lo estrenó Paul Simon en el famoso concierto que Simon & Garfunkel dieron en Central Park en 1981. Cuando llegó a la estrofa en que se menciona a Lennon un espectador saltó al escenario e intentó hablar con Paul quien se llevó uno de los sustos de su vida, pues por un momento pensó que el tema de la canción iba a repetirse con él mismo.
